South Astoria Neighborhood Guide
Some folks consider this the southern part of Astoria, below the Grand Central Parkway approach to the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. Others know it as the northern regions of Long Island City. But these days South Astoria is carving out its own identity. That was not a problem a century ago when this was the movie capital of the world, as Astoria Studios (then Paramount) churned out 25% of all silent features in a studio on 35th Avenue. South Astoria is a renter's neighborhood with residents of all nationalities taking advantage of the proximity to Manhattan without the scary price tags.
Architecture and landmarks
South Astoria is a potpourri of building styles from brick row houses to high rise apartments to the occasional Victorian souvenir from the 19th century. Single family homes reflect their mid-20th century roots, but also display contemporary residential construction. The Quinn Memorial Building on Broadway and 36th houses the Greater Astoria Historical Society and is an early 20th century Classical Revival building. The entire Paramount Studio Complex is a New York City Landmark and United States National Historic District.
Transport
South Astoria is near the end of the N and Q subway line to Midtown, which is a 20-minute ride away. The M or R trains will also take you to Manhattan in half that time. You can catch the M60 bus heading to La Guardia Airport and travel in your own dedicated lane. Local bus lines run along 21st Street and 30th Avenue.
Schools
ublic School 122 Mamie Fay is the neighborhood's highly rated elementary school. High School students can attend Long Island City High School on South Astoria's southern border or the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts high school.
Health
The neighborhood's Mount Sinai Queens is the go-to health center in western Queens for outpatient, emergency and inpatient care, and has a staff of 500 physicians. Medical care has been doled out here since the 19th century.
Safety
The crime stoppers of the 114th Precinct are responsible for South Astoria, handling 8.97 crimes per 1,000 residents in 2016, which ranks the neighborhood in the top 20% for safety in New York City.
Things to do
The conversion of Astoria/Paramount Studios into Kaufman-Astoria Studios has turned South Astoria into a bit of a New York City tourist attraction. The complex includes the American Museum of the Moving Image, a state-of-the-art multiplex movie theater and a working film studio that still produces top notch entertainment (Orange Is the New Black is one recent production).
Socrates Sculpture Park on Vernon Boulevard is an outdoor museum and public park where local artists can exhibit installations; on summer Saturdays GrowNYC operates a farmers' market in the park. Part of Astoria Park is in the neighborhood and offers many recreational opportunties; its swimming pool is the oldest and largest in the city.
The choice of eateries has more in common with Manhattan across the East River than Queens - just about anything from salsa joints to European cafes to Irish pubs to Greek gyro stands can be found on the streets of South Astoria.
