Sunnyside Neighborhood Guide
As recently as the early 1900s, the neighborhood now known as Sunnyside, Queens was nothing more than farmland. Thanks to the construction of the Queensboro bridge, and the founding of Sunnyside Gardens in 1924, for the past 75+ years it's been a haven for creative types searching for affordable rents and short commutes to Manhattan. In the last decade there have been quite a few new restaurants and bars opening. Though some still wish for more variety, its close proximity to other Queens neighborhoods gives residents plenty of choices in the area.
Architecture and landmarks
Sunnyside is known for its six-story apartment buildings, most of which were built in the early 1940s and have been converted to condos or coops. There are also a fair amount of pre-war row houses. There hasn't been a lot of new construction in the last decade, due in part to the fact that Sunnyside Gardens is a designated historical district. There are only two private parks in the entire city of New York and Sunnyside Gardens is one of them. It was one of the very first planned communities in the United States and includes one- to three-family homes and a few apartment buildings, all of which are made of Hudson Brick. Each home has a private balcony overlooking the park.
Transport
The 7 train is accessible in Sunnyside at three stations: 33rd Street / Rawson Street, 40th Street / Lowery Street, and 46th Street / Bliss Street. There are several local buses, including the Q32 and Q39, along with one express bus. Commuters can get to Manhattan via the Long Island Expressway or the Queens Midtown Tunnel, and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway offers a direct route to Brooklyn.
Schools
There are numerous public schools in the neighborhood, most notably PS 199, PS 150, PS 11, PS 343Q, and IS 125. Parents who reside in other districts often cite the good schools as one of their main reasons for moving to Sunnyside.
Health
There is no hospital within the boundaries of Sunnyside, though The Floating Hospital is located in nearby Long Island City. However, residents of Sunnyside do have numerous medical clinics and private practices to choose from.
Safety
Sunnyside is part of the 108th precinct of the New York Police Department. Between January and December 2016 there were 9.39 crimes per 1,000 residents within this neighborhood, which makes it one of the safest in the city.
Things to do
The main spots for food are along Queens Boulevard, Skillman Avenue, and Greenpoint Avenue. Sunnyside residents stop by Mama's Empanadas for empanadas and Alpha Donuts is one of the hottest donut spots in the city. Baruir's has long been a favorite spot for a cup of joe. Other popular eateries include Chihuahua Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, Dumplings & Things, and Mangal Kabob.
The Thalia Spanish Theatre is a great spot for original musicals; Flux Factory, over in LIC, is an old warehouse turned art collective; and pub row on Queens Boulevard is a seven-block line of local bars, beer gardens, and craft breweries. Stray Vintage is a great place to shop, as is Sunnyside Thrift Shop, and both offer tons of clothes, furniture, and books from years gone by.
Sunnyside Park is three acres of incredible park space, but it's a private park accessible only to residents of Sunnyside Gardens who pay dues and donate labor to keep it a pristine place. There is no public green park in the neighborhood, but there are 2 playgrounds with several facilities: Lou Lodati Playground has a special rainbow fountain and Thomas P. Noonan Playground fulfills residents' needs for basketball courts and jungle gyms.
