North Riverdale Neighborhood Guide

If you have ever wondered how high DO the numbered streets in New York City go, that number would be 263?that would put you in North Riverdale, the northernmost neighborhood in the city. North Riverdale is the kind of place where you can't see the city for the trees. Located on a ridge that parallels the Hudson River, historically this was a place of rambling summer country homes and sprawling religious retreats. In the 20th century, developers began carving up the estates and everyday New Yorkers, mostly Irish, began settling in the modest single family homes and high-rise brick apartment houses. Today, North Riverdale is a residential enclave defined more by the borders it shares with Yonkers and Van Cortlandt Park than the goings-on in Manhattan.

Architecture and landmarks

The most prominent resident of North Riverdale is the College of Mount Saint Vincent for Women. In 1855, the eight-year old school purchased Fonthill, the castle-like mansion of America's foremost Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest, that peered down on the Hudson River from its hilltop perch. The castle and several other heritage buildings remain on campus. More modern architectural statements in the neighborhood can be found in the geometrically-influenced James Strain House at 731 Ladd Road and the Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy on 254th Street. West 254th Street is also a place to find Shingle Style Victorian souvenirs from the 19th century Gilded Age mansions that marked North Riverdale. The Riverdale Yacht Club on the Hudson River was built in the 1880s to service their pleasures. The apartment buildings in the neighborhood have pedigrees as well; the 19-story Russian Federation United Nations Residence, fashioned from concrete and dressed in metal, is an experimental work from 1975 by famed skyscraper designers Skidmore Owings and Merrill.

Transport

Manhattan is a 35-minute ride from North Riverdale from the terminal of the No. 1 subway train in the southern part of the neighborhood. The Metro-North train reaches Grand Central Terminal in 25 minutes. Buses on Riverdale Avenue and Broadway can be used to connect to the train.

Schools

P.S. 81 rounds up the neighborhood kids for schooling in the younger grades. S.A.R. Academy High School on Riverdale Avenue is a well-regarded option for secondary schooling. There are several religious-affiliated schools in North Riverdale, and the Riverdale Neighborhood House has been a part of the community since 1872. Its Accredited Early Childhood Education and Universal Pre-K programs give all Riverdale children access to free, quality education.

Health

Montefiore Medical Center on East 210th Street is the medical hub for the neighborhoods of the north Bronx.

Safety

There were 11.18 crimes per 1,000 residents reported to the 50th Precinct in the past year - fewer than one a month, making North Riverdale one of New York City's safest neighborhoods.

Things to do

Though Riverdale Avenue and Mosholu Avenue have pockets of local eateries, North Riverdale is not a place for spending an evening on the town. Instead, residents cherish their suburban existence, tending to their gardens and checking out the events at the Riverdale Branch of the New York Public Library.

Whether you go to Van Cortland Park's 1,100+ acres to ride horses, play golf or cricket, ride mountain bikes or just lie in the grass, the open space is a defining element of life in North Riverdale.

On the other side of the neighborhood you can watch traffic float by on the Hudson River or drop in a fishing line. Hackett Park has walking paths through tree-shaded hills. For families, Vinmont Veteran Park offers ballfields and playgrounds.
